Winter Camping Workshop (Beginner Overnight)

The Plan: We will be staying on 40 private acres at our NOW Outdoors basecamp in Waupaca, WI just west of Hartman Creek State Park. Arrive at 10 am Saturday and hike down to the site. This hike is roughly 5-minutes walk from your car on a wide path. If there is deep snow on the ground, you may need a sled and snowshoes to haul your gear to camp.  If you do not have a sled, we have several sleds available to use for free. Upon arrival, we’ll help you find a place to set up your tent or hammock. Lunch will be served at noon Saturday. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will also be provided. Coffee, hot water, and apple cider will be available each day. Throughout the day various winter topics and hands-on skills will be presented by our very experienced team and volunteers:

• Building a winter fire
• Clothing and footwear
• Axe and saw use
• Winter-specific first aid skills
• Shelters and sleep systems
• Camp cooking and baking
• How NOT to get lost

Included:

• Meals Saturday lunch through Sunday breakfast
• Coffee, cider, and hot water
• Misc. group gear (tables, kitchen equipment)
• Warming tent
• Firewood
• Axes and saws
• First aid kit

Not Included:

• Personal items (tent, sleeping bag, etc.)
• If you need a sleeping bag, tent, etc., we have quality gear for rent on a first-come first-serve basis.

Glamping Option: We have two canvas wall tents outfitted with wood stoves available for rent. Our large 10x13 tent sleeps 4-6 people on ground pads or 4 on cots. Our 9x11.5 sleeps 3-4 on the ground or 3 on cots. Rental rates are an additional $160 and $140, respectively, for the 2-day event.

Meet Your Guide: Nick Gordon, Wilderness EMT, is the owner of NOW Outdoors. He is an experienced winter trekker and guide who has traveled hundreds of miles by snowshoe and camped in the harshest winter conditions both here in the Midwest and overseas. He teaches adventure recreation at UW-Milwaukee and teaches certification courses for the SOLO School of Wilderness Medicine. Since 2010, Nick has been helping people gain more skills, more knowledge, and more confidence outdoors throughout the Midwest and abroad including Nepal, Canada, Cambodia, Peru, Brazil, and deep in the Amazon Jungle.
